In 1998, a very close relative of mine was involved in a horrific car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. In more recent events, the guitar player in my choir was also involved a crash that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Since the occurance of these accidents, I have developed an interest in traumatic spinal cord injuries. A spinal cord injury usually begins with a sudden, traumatic blow to the spine that fractures or dislocates vertebrae. Spinal cord injuries (SCI) are due to a traumatic injury that results in a bruise (contusion), or a partial tear or a complete tear (transection) in the spinal cord. Because the spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body, SCI is a common cause of permanent disability and death in children.
